Hori Chapman – Takaparawhau

May 25, 1978 – An army convoy rattled down Tamaki Drive and up to Bastion Point to end a 506-day occupation with the eviction and arrest of 222 people after the announcement of a housing development on land belonging to Ngāti Whātua. More than 600 army and police personnel forcibly removed elders, men, women, children, and families.
The land was finally returned to Ngāti Whātua in the 1980s as part of the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process.
We sat down with Hori Chapman to talk about his experiences being at the historical protest and occupation.
