An urgency Hearing called by the Waitangi Tribunal into the process followed by the Crown”s appointment of Tuhoronuku as the mandated body to settle Ngapuhi Treaty Claims began today.
About two hundred people gathered at the Copthorn Waitangi today for the five day hearing which began with opening submissions from those representing over twenty Hapu claimant applications who are opposing the process and Crown who began cross examining witnesses.
The Tribunal has signaled its concerns about the Governments support for the Tuhoronuku mandate to the exclusion of other options. In a report setting out the reasons for holding an urgency hearing , it said the Governments handling of the mandate poorly reflected on the Crown and had caused serious dissent.
We are broadcasting coverage of the Hearing until Friday afternoon 9am to 5pm daily.
